Decarbonization of the shipping sector

With 3% of GHG emissions, maritime transport is both an efficient mode of transporting goods but also a sector whose emissions are difficult to reduce. While some solutions will support the optimization of emissions (wind assistance, speed reduction), only an evolution of fuels (Ammonia, methanol) will allow the sector to approach net zero in 2050: an ambitious objective requiring the establishment of a “green corridor” and a fleet to be renewed without delay.

This report by Zenon, written by Gregoire Dusseux, dedicated to alternative solutions for the decarbonization of maritime transport. This report focuses particularly on promising technical solutions and those frequently cited by industry players. It reflects the significant challenges the sector faces, in particular the lack of clear and easily accessible pathways to achieve net zero emissions.
